Review
A great album and a worthy successor of their last album Chutes Too Narrow! Wincing The Night Away contains a lot of emotionality, built up with fine melodies and subtle harmonic tensions, nevertheless always with a poppy rythm. The soft voice of singer James Mercer makes the songs so playful, casual and still touching. There are some ‘lesser’ songs but the overall quality of this album is very high, with some excellent songs like ‘Phantom Limb’ with its nice beat and beautiful chorus, and ‘A Comet Appears’ with its charming melody. Have fun with this wonderful album!
My favorite song: 4. Phantom Limb, 11. A Comet Appears

Jesse Harris(who has already written many songs for Norah Jones), is writing an OST for a movie of Ethan Hawke (the story reminded me of Before Sunrise/Before Sunset tbh), with many wonderful artists singing on it. Check out Feist’s new song on it!
The Fray has announced some new US tour-dates, check ‘em here.
Ryan Adams played ‘Two’ of his new album Easy Tiger in The Letterman Show, see for yourself:
I’ve also come across footage of a video of an arranged version of ‘These Girls’, also of his new album:
Amandine has changed its line-up: Violinist Kristina Lundin will join them now ‘for real’, since she already played with them on shows and on Solace in Sore Hands.
There is a new clip of Badly Drawn Boy: it is of the song ‘Promises’ of their last album ‘Born in the UK’
Devendra Banhart has revealed some details of his forthcoming fifth album: on his myspace he has written: “Dear Friends! It’s a beautiful day in California, we began mixing the record today, let’s see…it’s about 16 songs, some very unexpected guests.”

Tom Helsen’s last album! Everyone is probably wondering whether it is better than his previous album More Than Gold … Well in my opinion it isn’t. But I also hear a lot of people saying that they like it more. It contains more electronical elements and less pure voice + simple instrumentation. There are even some songs that I really dislike (e.g. his first single ‘Sun in her eyes’). Tom says he reinvented himself, but in my opinion, this isn’t better … because I love piano or simple acoustic guitar accompaniment. This electronic accompaniment isn’t all to bad and maybe you’ll even like it more …

Tom McRae, the king of the melancholic, has made another great album (the fourth already!). It is not as great as ‘Just Like Blood’, but it is a good album, with the usual singer-songwriter-songs, that drag you along the road of past sorrow and a scarred heart. He does come up with a bit more uptempo songs on this album. He does lose the miserable sound a bit sometimes and even sounds a bit happy in some songs … or maybe I’m just too tired from studying all day and having delusions :p … Have fun with the album & certainly give a listen to number 3 ‘Got A Suitcase Got Regret’, it’s a superb song!

And another folky album (I do seem to be in a folky mood these last days …)! Damien Jurado is singer-songwriter with a very folky sound. He has already made a lot of superb albums and this one is a great one too! With only his voice and his guitar, he brings you an aura of melancholy, a feeling of standing alone on a highway, without a car, all alone. It sounds like a ‘good’ mellow guy, who has had a lot of bad luck, but doesn’t complain about it. He nevers goes over the top though with his sad sentimentality. This album reminds me a lot of ‘The Shadowlands’ of Ryan Adams (my favorite number of him btw). Have fun listening!

Another good folk/americana allbum! A fragile voice and a banjo is mostly all you need, but Amandine also uses a lot of other instruments and do vary their songs a bit: sometimes they sound more ‘indie-pop’ than folk. Most people think they are American (since their music sounds very … american), but don’t be mistaken: they are a swedish band. The best song on this album is their opening track: Faintest Of Sparks, it’s just so simple and beautiful! The rest of the album contains a lot of strong songs!

I usually don’t ‘do’ sountracks … I even hate ‘em: they mostly contain a couple of good songs of some artist… so why would I buy the soundtrack instead of an album of the good artist(s)?
However, this soundtrack isn’t the usual one: it is a mellow soundtrack that puts 13 superb songs together that fit very well together. The songs on their own are very good mellow indie songs. This soundtrack even won a Grammy (in the category of “Best Compilation Soundtrack Album For A Motion Picture, Television or Media”)! I haven’t watched the movie yet though, but I’m planning to watch it this summer holiday
My favorite song:11. Such Great Heights, 2. Caring is Creepy
